NBR 903 1920s Carlisle Citadel

NBR 903 1920s Carlisle Citadel

North British Railway Reid 'I' (LNER 'C11') class 4-4-2 No. 903 'Cock O' The North'. Built by Robert Stephenson & Co. of Newcastle in August 1911 and withdrawn in August 1936 as LNER No. 9903.

The elegant glass canopy (removed in 1957/8) of Carlisle Citadel Station was either a window cleaner's dream or nightmare depending on your point of view! 'Cock O' The North' is getting under way with a down express in the early 1920s. Two other LNER locomotives inherited this name, Gresley's 'P2' No. 2001 and Thompson's 'A2/2' rebuild No. 501.
