9875 1938-09-01 Edinburgh Waverley
Reid NBR Class C11 4-4-2 No 9875 Midlothian waits to leave Edinburgh Waverley with the 4.15pm to Perth on 1st September 1938 after it was 'saved' for preservation and re-instated into service.
In reality the decision had been taken to preserve Midlothian after scrapping had commenced, the frames still existed at Cowlairs and they managed to find the boiler from No 9876 Waverley and a reversing lever from 9906 Teribus. Unbelievably new wheels and axles were cast and new splashers were fashioned, the other bits were sourced from the scrapyard or stock! The pheonix Midlothian was put into traffic on 15th June 1938 but withdrawn for repairs in November 1939, and was quietly scrapped during the early years of the Second World War.
