View westward from the level-crossing at Tramway Junction, towards Gloucester Central etc. The 9.15am from Paddington has arrived at Gloucester Central with a 'Castle' 4-6-0, then Hawksworth '9400' class large Pannier No. 9477, a former Old Oak Common engine (built 7/52, withdrawn 6/65) brings it out again for the last 7½ miles to Cheltenham St James' (due 12.50pm).
Peter Kerslake says "The crew of 9477 have ensured that they have the correct "Express Passenger" lamps in position even though they're only going as far as Cheltenhama and I wonder whether they were a bit short of more appropriate motive power at Horton Road depot and this was the best that they could do for this working. Horton Road's Running Shed is on the right, with the London Midland Region's lines to and from Eastgate station on the left. That station and the Western's at Central were linked by a lengthy covered footbridge, whilst the Midland's Barnwood depot will be passed by 9477 and its train once they've crossed Tramway Junction just ahead."
