8486 1960s Reading
Trevor Tremethick says "I thought you might like to know that, to my knowledge, she was the longest-serving 94XX at Truro shed. She went there new from the builders Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns (Lot 386) in June 1952 and remained there (the last 94XX at 83F) until the shed closed to steam in March 1962. I probably had many a run with her on the Falmouth line. After spells at Slough, Reading, Oxford and OOC, she was finally withdrawn from Bath Green Park of all places in March 1965. As only 8436 and 8486 were based at Bath S & D. this makes her a bit of a rarity!"
He adds more info on what they were used for at Truro "As often as not there was a 94 on the Falmouth, turn and turn about with 45s, 55s and occasionally 57XX. They were also used for yard shunting at Truro and I think occasionally for trip work on the main line. However, an important duty (for which a 94 was stationed in the East goods yard) was banking heavy trains up to the limit of shunt at Highertown Tunnel. This was after unfortunate experience with slippery Britannias which were not popular and sometimes called 'doodlebugs'!"
