BR Standard class 5MT 4-6-0 No 73049 pilots Rebuilt West Country 4-6-2 No 34042 Dorchester climbing to Masbury summit on the S&DJt with the 10.05am Bournemouth West to Bradford summer Saturday express on September 8, 1962.

Peter Kerslake says "The Somerset and Dorset line in all its splendour in this fine portrait, sadly dating from what was to be the last year for through passenger services such as this, and this particular day, the 8th. September of 1962 seeing the final "Pines Express" workings on the line with 92220 "Evening Star" taking the northbound working, destined to be the heaviest recorded and unassisted passenger service on the S.& D.
Standard 73049 assists 34042 "Dorchester" on this heavily loaded northbound duty that sad day, with such services being rerouted away from the line at the conclusion of these 1962 Summer Services and thereafter running via Banbury, Oxford and Basingstoke.
The Bulleid light "Pacifics", although being strong and capable engines, were not ideally suited for working the Somerset and Dorset, with a reputation for slipping badly when restarting and invariably needing a pilot engine as seen here."
