Piloting a Jubilee on The Devonian Peter Kerslake says Double heading wasn't usual at Gloucester , but a nicely turned out 73001 is pilot engine here to a less well prepared 45561 , the latter bearing a Headboard , for the Devonian . Both engines will have come on to this working at Bristol Temple Meads , as fresh engines relieving the Western Region's locomotive which has worked up to there from the far west , and this is the northern or Birmingham side of Gloucester' s Midland Region Eastgate station , with the tower of Gloucester Cathedral just visible above the covered footbridge linking Eastgate and Central stations Thinking about this photograph again I suspect that 73001 might well have come on as a pilot engine to this working here at Gloucester , and not to have worked through from Bristol as I originally thought , as it is the Jubilee that has the Headboard in place , which indicates that it has probably been working this train on its own from Bristol , and which leads me think either that it may be in trouble , or is overloaded , and has called for an assisting engine northwards from here at Gloucester.
