Brand new,, newly constructed at Derby Works in 1951, and due to be allocated from new to Derby shed. In February 1965 until January 1966 this locomotive was at Bath Green Park , working the Somerset and Dorset traffic in company with others of the class but it all ended badly for 73001. On 1st December 1965 when it suffered a Blow Back of hot flames from the firebox whilst working a passenger duty at Midsomer Norton , fortunately the footplate crew together with a photographer and Inspector on the footplate all escaped injury with a fractured steam pipe in the smokebox having caused the Blow Back . 73001 was accordingly taken out of traffic and was withdrawn in January 1966.
