Shed 1961-06-25 Moorswater
A delightfully rural setting for the little sub shed at Moorswater, on the Liskeard to Looe line, one of the very few Cornish branch lines that escaped Mr. Beeching's "axe" and which still remains today serving the immensely popular holiday resort of Looe.
Stalwarts on the line in the 'fifties were the class "45XX" tank engines, with St. Blazey Depot providing the locomotives which were housed overnight here at Moorswater. Dating back to December of 1860 the line from here at Moorswater down to the port of Looe was initially for freight only, primarily stone and copper quarried and mined from Cheeswring moorland high above Liskeard, with passenger services being introduced in September of 1879 and an extension of the line up to Liskeard from Coombe Junction in February, 1901 when a 'station' at Coombe Junction was built, replacing the existing platform. Coombe "station" was a reversing point only, with the spur from Liskeard dropping down the one in thirty four gradient, but the "station" had no booking office or passenger facilities because no passengers were ever recorded as alighting or boarding from there!
