25656 1938 Rugby

Bowen Cooke's 'no frills' design for his L&NWR 'Prince of Wales' class 4-6-0s L&NWR's is seen to advantage in this portrait of 'Shark' taken at Rugby Station in 1938. As new Stanier LMS 'Black 5' and 'Jubilee' 4-6-0s cascaded onto the scene, fewer and fewer of this 246-strong, fine machines survived. The last four (just!) being taken into BR stock in 1948. 'Shark' was built at Crewe in Jan. 1916 as L&NWR No.1084 and was withdrawn in Aug. 1938.
