Fowler 2-6-2T No.40020 which had been withdrawn in July was still extant at Bedford on 19th October 1961. These engines, which were significant underperformers compared with their larger 2-6-4T brothers, were used for many years on the St.Pancras-Luton suburban services until the DMUs took over.
