Peter Kerslake says "53804 was the fifth of the initial series of six built at Derby specifically for the Somerset and Dorset in 1914 when the Midland Railway was responsible for motive power on the line,. Five more entered built by Robert Stephenson & Co. Workhorses of the Somerset and Dorset for their working lives the first to be withdrawn was 53800 in 1959 whilst 53807 outlived the others and lasted until September 1964."
