42977 1956-08 Saltney Ferry Station

42977 1956-08 Saltney Ferry Station

Ex-LMS Stanier '6P5F' class 2-6-0 No. 42977. Built at Crewe in January 1934 as LMS No. 13277 and withdrawn in June 1966. One of Stanier's less heralded designs, nonetheless their lineage is evident, looking very much like a scaled down '8F'.

Saltney Ferry Station in Flintshire is the scene where 42977 is hurrying through with an express in August 1956. Saltney Ferry closed in 1962. Mold Junction shed was alongside and to the right of the station buildings as viewed in this photograph. The shed structure still stands today (2022) although now in poor condition and has been used for many years by a scrap metal merchant. No trace of the station itself remains.
