Peter Kerslake says "The second of just four of the "Armstrong" class, the first standard gauge 4-4-0 design for the Great Western this fine image has number 8 "Gooch" somewhere in about 1900.
The massive outside frames did not require additional strengthening plates over the main driving wheels as did other classes and the eight locomotives were introduced between March and May of 1894 for duties between Paddington and Bristol although in 1909 they saw service in and around the Wolverhampton area.
In company with number 7, "Armstrong", number 14 "Charles Saunders" and number 16 "Brunel" this one seen here was rebuilt between 1915 and 1923 with smaller wheels and cylinders thereby joining the twenty existing "Flower" class, but the four such rebuilds had all been condemned by 1928."
