The Country's most powerful locomotive in the form of Beyer Garratt 69999 is seen here at Gorton Works where it had been converted from coal to oil burning in late 1952 but the conversion later resulted in problems in the supply of oil sufficient to raise enough steam when in service .
With electrification of the Woodhead line finally being achieved in June of 1954 the locomotive was transferred to Bromsgrove and took up banking duties on the Lickey Incline before being withdrawn anf cut up at Doncaster in 1956 .
The massive lamp , an essential aid for the footplate crews when buffering up to its train whilst on banking duties during its heydays such as on the Worsborough Bank , is shown to advantage in this view. but with the introduction of the class EM1 and EM2 electric locomotives banking duties were taken over by those locomotives, and the Garrett's days on the Woodhead were finally brought to an end in mid 1954.
