70034 1959 Stratford

70034 1959 Stratford

With the newly built diesel depot behind. Peter Kerslake says A splendid shot of a nicely cleaned 70034 Thomas Hardy which highlights the handsome and powerful lines of the class which was in my view only spoiled by the unsightly pipework affixed to the outside of the firebox and which might possibly have been designed to be less obtrusive, but there you are ! A 1959 photograph with the engine allocated to Norwich from the January of that year and deployed with its sisters working the tightly timed express duties betwen Liverpool Street and North Norfolk, and so highly regarded by the footplate crews at both Norwich and Stratford before their days in East Anglia came to an end with 70034 subsequently going over to the Midland Region in March1963 and a transfer to Willesden. Like so many of the class Thomas Hardy was condemned from Carlisle Kingmoor, where so many Britannias ended their days, in May1967.
