70044 1966-07-29 Wakefield Kirkgate

On a parcels train when allocated to Stockport Edgeley, its final shed, with 90076.

Peter Kerslake says "70044 Earl Haig has steam to spare with a lot also coming from a leaking whistle and cylinder gland on the driver's side as well.
In company with 70043 Lord Kitchener the two engines were the last in the 1952 building programme, both appearing in mid 1953 with Westinghouse air pumps fitted on each side of the smokebox to evaluate their use on high speed freights, particularly the 1500 ton coal freights from Toton to Brent which they often worked in double headed formation. The pumps were removed in 1957 and 70043 was condemned from Crewe South in August 1965 whilst 70044 lasted until October 1966 withdrawn whilst shedded at Stockport Edgeley."
