70028 1950s Chipping Sodbury
Peter Kerslake says "What a splendid shot of Cardiff Canton's 70028 Royal Star with the exhaust steam having lifted clear and not obstructing the locomotive in this shot from the top of the embankment at this delightful location, one of the late and renowned George Heiron's favourite locations.
70028 is working the Up 'Red Dragon' from Cardiff to London, and is now taking the Badminton line to Swindon. The locomotive and its crew will work back home again to Cardiff later the same day after a quick turn round at Ranelagh Bridge.
The ealy 'fifties saw Canton's "Britannias" reigning supreme on the Top Link workings such as this, running between Cardiff and Paddington on daily "Out and Back" rosters, but by December 1956 their role had been reduced with the transfer to Canton of ten displaced "Britannias" from Old Oak Common, Laira nd Newton Abbot. In 1960 the future of the five original "Britannias" was weakened further when six "Kings" arrived from Old Oak as well!
70028 ended its days on the London Midland Region and was condemned from Stockport Edgeley in January 1967".
