70043 1955c London Euston
Britannia No 70043 on arrival at Euston with an express from Manchester London Road c1955.
Peter Kerslake says "Longsight depot's 70043 sits quietly at Euston's buffer stops after working to the Capital doubtless from its home city of Manchester, its twin Westinghouse air pumps prominent on each side of the smokebox.
In company with classmate 70044 these two "Britannias" were the last to be built under the 1952 construction programme and both were fitted with Westinghouse equipment to permit their use on heavily loaded and high speed coal trains running between Toton and Brent, often working double headed together with loads of some 1500 tons, and what a sight that must have been!
The Westinghouse equipment was later removed in 1957 whereupon both engines were fitted with the standard pattern smoke deflectors with 70043 becoming "Lord Kitchener" and 70044 "Earl Haig".
