70039 1950s London Liverpool Street
On The East Anglian arriving at the dark and smoky teminal. Nice view of the loco servicing area
Peter Kerslake says "Some sunshine would have helped, but this is a nice shot of 70039 "Sir Christopher Wren" running into Liverpool Street when the "Britannias" were the mainstay of express workings between here and Norwich.
By late 1960, however, things had begun to change and Norwich Depot started to lose its "Britannias", with this one, in company with 70040 "Clive of India" and 70041 "Sir John Moore" being moved to Immingham.
The footplate crews at Immingham welcomed their new engines, and they were rostered on express passenger workings between Cleethorpes and Kings Cross in addition to running on expresss perishables and fish workings from Grimsby to the Capital and on passenger duties to Leeds from Cleethorpes, with a total of seven eventually being located at Immingham Depot before they all went to the Midland Region.
