70014 1965-12-01 Winwick Junction
Running without nameplates and unusually a smokebox numberplate at this early date, although the latter were apparently prone to cracking.
Peter Kerslake adds "Our lucky cameraman has got the sun behind him in this splendid image from Winwick Junction, north of Crewe on the West Coast main line but 70014 "Iron Duke" looks well past its best in this 1965 portrait, the engine being shedded at Crewe South at this time.
Allocated when newly constructed in June1951 to Norwich for just a week or so "Iron Duke" was very soon sent to the Southern Region's Nine Elms and Stewarts Lane Depots until June1958 and whilst a Southern Region engine was rostered on the fast Boat Train workings from the Capital to the South Coast, including the "Golden Arrow", a far cry from this mixed freight shown here"
