70020 1965c Crewe North

It looks as if it has just lost its Mercury nameplate and carries a 5A shed plate.

A sad and folorn looking 70020 " Mercury " on its then home Depot at Crewe North where it remained from January until May1965 .
Transferred away from the Western Region's Cardiff Canton Depot in September1961 " Mercury " had earlier been newly delivered to Old Oak Common in July1951 the third of that Depot's allocation of " Britannias ", from where in its glory days it worked passenger rosters from Paddington to Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff and Wolverhampton until its move to Canton from Old Oak in December1956.
Canton then became home for fifteen Western Region " Britannias ", the ten transferred there from Old Oak, Laira and Newton Abbot joining forces with that Depot's own five, but by September1961 suitable work for the " Britannias " was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain for the Canton Shedmasters and so all the " Britannias " ended their days on the Midland Region and " Mercury " was finally condemned from Carlisle Kingmoor, the final resting place of most of the class, in January1967
