70023 1963-04 Crewe Works
In the background is withdrawn off Malton in Aug 62 NER region Ivatt 2MT 46481 a much rarer cop.
Allocated from new in August1951 to Old Oak Common, 70023 was moved to Cardiff Canton in February1957 in company with four other of its sister " Britannias " from Old Oak, together with one from Newton Abbot and four from Laira, thereby increasing Canton's allocation of the class from its original five to no less than fifteen. Their stay at Canton was short lived, however, and a few years saw the whole class transferred to the Midland Region. At the date of this view in April1963 " Venus " would have been allocated to Aston, but it went to Crewe North in September that same year before widespread moves round a number of London Midland Depots saw its finally withdrawn in December, 1967 from Carlisle Kingmoor .
its early days on the Western Region had brought its down to Plymouth on a regular basis, usually working back home on a heavily loaded duty via Bristol or a tightly timed express passenger working directly to Paddington.
