70039 1960s Polmadie

Off 12A with EE type 4 and a Peak (shown in another shot) in the background. As Diesel units were introduced on the former Great Eastern main line between Liverpool Street and Norwich in the late 'sixties Norwich Depot's Britannias were sidelined from their duties working the express passenger rosters and it was this one,70039 Sir Christopher Wren which was the first to be removed from Norwich in company with 70040 Clive of India and 70041 Sir John Moore, all of which were transferred directly to Immingham in December1960. As they had been at Norwich in earlier years, the Britannnias were welcomed by both shed staff and footplate crews at Immingham and were put to work on express passenger services between Cleethorpes and Kings Cross, running via Boston and Peterborough as well as making frequent appearances on express peishables traffic, in particular fish workings from nearby Grimsby. Additional use on Cleethorpes to Leeds passenger rosters saw the Immingham Britannias, which eventually totalled seven, operating on a daily Out and Back basis, and running via Scunthorpe. Sir Christopher Wren was moved to the Midland Region's Carlisle Upperby Depot in December1963 and withdrawn from Kingmoor Depot in September1967 .
