70029 1963c London Euston
Bill Elkins says 70029 being an ex 86C Cardiff Canton engine back in the day (sorry about dates) I am surprised to note that 70029 still sports Western Region style headlamps and WR lamp irons despite being allocated to 21D Aston. Canton cleaners would have had this loco gleaming! And Peter Kerslake The fireman of 70029 Shooting Star is no doubt pleased to see the end of the road at Euston as they arrive on what looks to be a special working judging by the Z in the Reporting Number and on what seems to be a dismal and overcast day in or about 1963.70029 would have been allocated to Birmingham's Aston Depot at this period in time before a move to Carlisle Kingmoor took place in October1964, from where it was finally withdrawn in October, 1967 Shooting Star had been the last of the five Britannias allocated to Cardiff Canton from new in November1952, from where it was put to good use, joining its four sisters on the tightly timed passenger duties between Cardiff and Paddington which involved a brief stop over following arrival at Paddington at the Ranelagh Depot outside Paddington station before the run back home to Cardiff that same day on a later express working. In common with its four Canton sisters, and the other ten Western Region Britannias, 70029 left Canton in mid 1961 upon transfer to the Midland Region from where they ended their working lives some six years later
