70028 1952-06 Paddington
A splendid shot of Cardiff Canton's 70028 Royal Star clearly in reverse gear and backing out following arrival at Paddington with a member of the footplate crew watching the road ahead as they prepare to cross the mass of trackwork and points which will take them over to Ranelagh yard. Locomotives such as this on workings up from Cardiff would not need to go out to Old Oak Common but could be turned, oiled and watered at Ranelagh yard, a short distance out from Paddington and on the departure side of the tracks, and there is clearly a sufficient amount of coal left in 70028's tender for its return home to Cardiff later this same day. The date, however, is incorrect, as this engine was not built until October1952, so it must be later than that shown !
