70022 1963-08-24 Carlisle

The firemans toils are wasted whilst working the 1M31 Aberdeen-Manchester. A good shot of 70022 Tornado at Carlisle with a few spotters on scene. The flexible screen, fitted between the engine and tender on the Britannias in an effort to combat draughts on the footplate always appeared to be more of a hindrance than help, invariably hanging loose as seen here and probably did little to fulfill the intended purpose. Tornado, in company with 70019 Lightning were unusual in that they were both allocated at Newton Abbot in their early days, although it was Tornado which was there the longest, from April1952 until a move to Cardiff Canton in December, 1956. Whilst at Newton Abbot this engine worked frequently to and from Bristol Temple Meads, ofteen on the Devonian express in company with that shed's well kept Castles. At the date of this photograph the engine would be shedded at Aston, before going north to Carlisle in October1964 prior to withdrawal from Carlisle Kingmoor in December1967.
