70035 1962-04-05 Grimsby Docks Station

70035 1962-04-05 Grimsby Docks Station

These photos would have been taken from the long footbridge that ran to the west of Grimsby Docks station. At one time the bridge was publicised as the 'longest in the country' Nowadays it is much shorter, having been cut down as the sidings at Docks station were lifted and the railway land sold off. The loco is backing light engine towards Grimsby Dock station almost certainly to take a fish train over the Great Central main line. The Immingham Britannia’s were employed on these duties from March/April 1962. The clock tower of Grimsby Dock Office can be seen above the station and to the right of that is the 309 ft Dock Tower. Thanks to Les Wells and Vic Smith for his help with this caption. Tony Saville adds The Immingham based Brits (70035-41) worked the Grimsby - Whitland (not London) Fish Train down the GC and then to Banbury were there was a loco change. I used to see the Fish Train pass through Mansfield on the erstwhile Mansfield Railway (Clipstone to Kirkby-in-Ashfield Sth Jct). They also worked Express passenger trains direct to London Kings Cross via Louth, Boston and Spalding down the now long closed East Lincs line. All the Brits were transferred away from Immingham in 1963, the final 6 leaving in December 1963 70035 Rudyard Kipling was moved from its home at Norwich in October 1961 to Immingham before moving again in June1963 to March for a six month spell, not its first spell at March, however, as it had, for some unknown reason, been allocated there from Norwich earlier in June 1958 before going back home to Norwich again ! Whilst at Immingham from late 1960 and early 1961 the Britannias, which had been displaced from their former duties by diesels, were rostered on Kings Cross passenger turns from Cleethorpes, running via Boston and Peterborough in addition to working fish and express perishables fast fitted freights from Grimsby as seen here before ending up at Carlisle 's Upperby and Kingmoor Depots from late 1963.
