During the rebuilding of the station in 1963 or '64.

Peter Kerslake says "With its smokebox door lamp bracket now in the lower Midland Region position 70020 'Mercury' had been fitted with Midland Region handholds at Crewe from its beginning for some reason despite it being allocated to the Western Region and Old Oak Common depot from new in July of 1951.
Following five years spent at Cardiff Canton 'Mercury', in common with the other Western Region 'Britannias' was sent to the Midland Region, initially housed at Carlisle Kingmoor from September of 1961 and finally meeting its end from there in January of 1967."
