70019 1952-06-28 Newton Abbot
BR 7MT 4-6-2 No 70019 Lightning with a Paddington express (15 coaches) leaving Newton Abbot on 28 June 1952.
Peter Kerslake says "Originally destined for Plymouth's Laira depot from newly built in June of 1951 for some reason 70019 'Lightning' was sent instead to Newton Abbot with Laira receiving 70022 'Tornado' in August of that year instead, the pair later finding themselves at the intended destinations.
Seen here at the London end of Newton Abbot station 'Lightning' would doubtless have had a pilot engine from Plymouth over the banks to here which has now gone over to the Depot.
Transferred to Cardiff Canton in the mass move of the Laira, Old Oak Common and Newton Abbot 'Britannias' 70019 was later to serve on the Midland Region from Carlisle Kingmoor, Manchester's Longsight, Crewe, Birmingham's Aston and finally from Carlisle Upperby from where it was condemned in March of 1966."
