70037 1965-09-17 Beattock Summit

70037 1965-09-17 Beattock Summit

BR 7MT 4-6-2 No 70037 formerly 'Hereward the Wake' with a down Perth express passing Beattock summit on 17 September 1965.

Peter Kerslake says "Newly delivered to Stratford M.P.D. in December of 1952 'Hereward the Wake' went to Norwich in the mass transfer of the Stratford 'Britannias' to Norwich when staffing problems especially in the London area were causing problems but as the English Electric Type 4 Diesels began to take over express workings between Liverpool Street and Norwich 70037 together with 70035 and 70036 were despatched to March in November of 1960.
Unwanted and unused at March happily 70037 was sent to Immingham in September of 1961 where it was used on Kings Cross to Cleethorpes passenger, parcels and fish workings. The mass transfer of all the Eastern Region 'Britannias' to the Midland Region in December1963 saw 70037 housed firstly at Carlisle Upperby and then at the adjacent Kingmoor Depot in January of 1964 from where it was condemned in November, 1966.
This photograph would, therefore, have been from when 70037 was shedded at Kingmoor."
