70031 1966-07-22 Shap

BR 7MT 4-6-2 No 70031 Byron with a northbound freight climbing Shap on 22 July 1966.

Peter Kerslake says "With just over a year left in service 70031 has had some of its smokebox door fittings picked in white but is in typical run down condition as were most of the Midland Region 'Britannais' in their later years, sad to say.
This view from July of 1966 would be from when 'Byron', which had earlier been one of the first of its class to be allocated to the London Midland Region from newly built in November of 1952, initially housed at Holyhead.
Later moves took 'Byron' to Manchester, Birmingham, Willesden, Crewe and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was finally withdrawn in November of 1967.
At the date of this view 70031 would have been housed at Carlisle Upperby."
