70030 1965-06-19 Gloucester relief line

70030 1965-06-19 Gloucester relief line

Peter Kerslake says "70030 has steam to spare as it takes the loop line at Tuffley Jct, with the line to Eastgate station just visible on the extreme RHS. It's 7pm and the train is a West of England-Midlands Saturday working which 70030 has taken over at Bristol, having worked a down express to there earlier in the day. Britannias started working these duties the previous Saturday. In 1964 these summer Saturday workings were handled by the remaining few Castles, but they were no longer available. Delving more deeply into this photograph taken by myself in June 1965 I cannot find any reference to 70030 William Wordsworth being transferred to Wolverhampton's Oxley Depot to assist with the 1965 additional Summer Timetable duties for which Oxley was required to provide motive power, one of which is shown in my picture. It was certainly the case, and records confirm that 70045, 70047 and 70053 were all loaned to Oxley from their home at Holyhead from June until September 1965 as the Oxley Castles which had worked those holiday duties in 1964 had by 1965 all been withdrawn. Records show that at the date of my photograph 70030 William Wordsworth was allocated to Crewe South, so how it became involved with the workings that Summer from Oxley is somewhat of a mystery!"
