70024 1957-05 Crewe Works
Outside the Paint Shop after a repaint with the later BR emblem, 70024 only returned to Cewe Works on two occasions, 1955 & 1957. This is May 1957, the loco being released on 25 May 1957 following a General Overhaul, having covered 359,615 miles. Allocated from new in October 1951 toLaira Vulcan has an 86C, Cardiff Canton, shedplate; it was reallocated to Canton from Laira in December 1956. When work for the Britannias on the West of England main lines diminished in the late ' fifties those at both Laira and at Old Oak Common spent some months at Canton, joining that Depot's original five Britannias, which had been warmly received by the crews and shed staff at that establishment from the first allocation in 1952. Their spell on the Western region was short lived, however, as they all gradually found themselves on the Midland Region for the remainder of their working lives.
