70023 1959 Stoke Gifford

With The Red Dragon. Canton have turned out 70023 Venus in their traditionally fine condition for this top link working, but it looks in danger of losing its Reporting Number, which seems to have slipped somewhat ! Having worked through the Severn Tunnel this shot shows Venus taking the Badminton line at Stoke Gifford, thereby bypassing Bristol, and following its arrival at Paddington Venus will be turned and watered at Ranelagh Depot, just outside Paddington, as its tender can be seen to have been well filled by Canton, before it returns home to Wales later this same day. The cut out hand holes in the smoke deflectors show up well in this view, replacing the original hand rails whch were held partially to blame for the 1955 Milton accident involving Polar Star, as they were thought to have resricted the footplate crews forward vision in that unfortunate incident. Venus, originally an Old Oak Common engine, was to remain at Canton until September1961 when it went to Carlisle Kingmoor, from where it was withdrawn in December1967.
