70030 1961-11-12 March

One of the East Anglian line's favourite poets 70030 William Wordsworth looks unusually well cared for, some six months after its transfer to March Motive Power Depot from Norwich in June1961, its duties on the former Great Eastern main line having been taken over by diesels. The reasoning behind the decision to transfer some twenty two Britannias to March from Norwich and Stratford from the first in June1961 until the last two years later has probably been lost in the passage of time, but very little appropriate work was availablefor them at their new home and a number were very soon after arrival at March stored out of use, their future being very uncertain and a sad contrast to their former days when they performed so well for ten years whilst working between North Norfolk, the Essex Coast and Liverpool Street. The subsequent wholesale transfer of the class, including those on the Western and Southern Regions, to the Midland Region saved them from withdrawal, but not before many had received essential overhauls at Crewe Works with William Wordsworth being reallocated from here at March to Crewe North in July1963 before ending its days from Carlisle Upperby in June1966 .
