70031 1960s Derby

70031 1960s Derby

70031 Byron had been at Longsight since January 1953 and would have been a regular on trains between Manchester and London. Until 1964 'The Palatine' ran over the Midland route between Manchester Central and St.Pancras calling at Chinley, Millers Dale, Matlock, Derby and Leicester. As the 'Britannia' crosses Five Arches Bridge the driver looks back to see what the young lad is doing on the adjacent track. Geoff Moore says, 'he would have most certainly been placing a penny on the line. let it get flattened. and record the number of the loco that caused the damage. and retained the penny. done it many times on five arches!'
