With D219 and 45298 coupled to a coal weighing tender Firth of Tay disgraced itself very badly on 21st. of January, 1960 when, at the head of an overnight Sleeper running from Glasgow to Saint Pancras for some reason it lost both its lower slidebars at Settle. Although the engine ran on with its train for some considerable distance minus these rather important fitments it finally came to grief when the remaining motion subsequently and understandably shattered, damaging the track so seriously that an approaching freight was derailed and collided with the Sleeper causing the deaths of five unfortunate passengers
