70051 1960s Nottingham Shed

70051 1960s Nottingham Shed

Britannia' No.70051 appears to have no lining on the tender nor footplate valance, although the cabside might well be lined. Firth of Forth was originally a Scottish Region engine, moving to Crewe North in November 1962 where it stayed until the shed closed in 1965 and it went down the road to Crewe South. Following a four month's allocation to Crewe South Firth of Forth was one of the eight Britannias which found themselves reallocated to Banbury from September1965, their transfer providing that Depot with an extension of life before it finally closed in October the following year. Banbury had been an important Motive Power Depot in previous years whilst within the Western Region, with some seventy locomotives on its books during the ' fifties and before its transfer to the London Midland Region in 1963. The eight Britannias spent just four months at Banbury before moving to Carlisle Kingmoor in January1966 and whilst at Banbury were rostered on duties to Nottingham, as seen here, and worked local services into London's Marylebone terminus. 70051 was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in December, 1967 Tony Saville adds The workings to Nottingham when at Banbury were on the GC and the locomotives were serviced at Annesley (on the GC), not Nottingham (on the Midland). In this picture the engine carries a Crewe North shedplate (5A) where it was based 1963-65 so it is probably in that time frame
