70016 D5010 1964-08 Birmingham New Street
A Sulzer Type '2' D5010 which had probably arrived on a stopping train from Rugby alongside Britannia 70016 Ariel on a Manchester express at Birmingham New Street in August 1964. In the background is the newly built Rotunda tower. The diesel was then allocated to Rugby, having spent several years on loan to the Southern Region, while the Britannia, originally a Western Region engine, had been at Aston shed since June 1963.
Ed Pucell remembers "There was excitement in Aston when all the WR Brits arrived. We would 'do' the shed every Sunday afternoon to see what the latest ones were. We cabbed them all of course."
