70047 1961c Chester

The only Britannia never to be named, 70047 leaves Upper Northgate Street tunnel and is about to pass through the shorter second tunnel beneath Victoria Road and Northgate station on the approach to Chester General with the 7.30am Holyhead-London, the ‘Emerald Isle Express’, probably in 1961. It was allocated to Holyhead from new in June 1954 until November 1959 when it moved to Crewe North but returned in August 1960 and stayed until June 1961 when it went to Willesden. 70047 was fitted with AWS in December 1959 during a Heavy General repair at Crewe Works.
