70018 1956-02-18 Bath Spa
On the Down Merchant Venturer A somewhat misty and wet day here at Bath with Old Oak's 70018 Flying Dutchman adding to the murk as he pauses with the down Merchant Venturer, the 11.15.a.m. from Paddington, making the only stop here at 1.28.p.m. on its way to Temple Meads at Bristol. The booked return working for this engine is the 4.15.p.m. Bristolian from Bristol back to the Capital and the engine's tender looks to be rather unusually very low on coal in this picture, so it may well need to be recoaled at Bristol's Bath Road before its afternoon departure. Transferred to Cardiff Canton in December of this same year, in common with all Old Oak and Laira's Britannias, 70018 went to Carlisle in September1961, remaining on the Midland Region until withdrawal came in December1966
