70026 1956c Swindon
One of the later batch of Western Region Britannias allocated from new to Cardiff Canton where they were warmly received is seen here in the shape of 70026 Polar Star, with injector on and running non stop on the through road at Swindon heading eastwards to Paddington. The handgrips in the smoke deflector are seen here, replacing the original handrails following the derailment of, I believe, this very engine caused by its driver missing a track change due to impaired forward vision for which the earlier handrails were blamed. The unfortunate accident occurred on the main line to Paddington and east of Swindon with a Sunday working from Wales, earlier diverted via Gloucester. Unlike their fellow footplatemen at Laira and, to a lesser extend, Old Oak Common, the Cardiff Canton crews found the Britannias capable and reliable workhorses, so perhaps it was the South Devon banks that didn't suit the class .
