Waiting with a parcels train for Carlisle, No. 70049 Solway Firth makes an impressive sight under the station lights, probably in 1965 following its transfer from Willesden to Kingmoor in November 1964. Note the containers, possibly empty meat containers, loaded in fitted opens - rarely seen in parcels trains. The MOD quite often used this practice, presumably for security reasons as you could not open the doors to tamper with the cargo. This was especially so with traffic originating at the South Wales MOD sites. The train may be heading for Stranraer although Heysham is also a strong possibility. I believe there was a regular Class 3 train to Stranraer at that time although I'm not quite sure of its origin so it might well have conveyed shipment traffic in containers.
