71000 1954 Grayrigg

71000 1954 Grayrigg

BR class 8P Pacific No 71000 Duke of Gloucester at the foot of Grayrigg bank as it passes Oxenholme with the down 'Mid-Day Scot' when new in 1954.
Peter Kerslake says "With no less than sixteen coaches with a total weight approaching some 600 tons 71000 appears to be making light work of the heavy load, the "Duke" having come onto the train at Crewe, its home shed. A year or so later saw 71000 working not northwards, but southwards from Crewe on the less demanding rosters from Crewe to Euston, regularly on the "Mid-Day Scot" until condemned in August 1962."
