71000 1960c Cleghorn
No 71000 Duke of Gloucester with the up Mid-day Scot near Cleghorn c1960.
Peter Kerslake says "Emerging from Crewe Works in May of 1954 the sole class "8P" Standard 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" was immediately allocated to Crewe North Motive Power Depot, joining the shed's roster of existing Class Eight rated "Princess Royals" and "Princess Coronations".
Sadly, however, "The Duke" was unfavourably compared with the Stanier designed classes and was relegated to working on class seven duties with the crews at Crewe taking the view that she was a good Class seven locomotive but not as good as their highly regarded "Princess Royals" or "Duchesses".
Initial duties took 71000 from Crewe northwards to Perth, manned by Crewe North footplate crews, and with loads often in excess of 600 tons on the overnight workings but 71000 soon gained a reputation of being heavy on coal and was not favourably regarded by the Crewe footplate men.
Later years as seen here saw 71000 working southwards from Crewe to Euston and back before she was withdrawn in August of 1962 but saved from being cut up at Barry and eventually restored and still with us today."
