64796 1957-06 Bradford St Dunstan's
LNER J39 0-6-0 No 64796 pilots B1 class 4-6-0 No 61296 with an express at St Dunstans in June 1957. The spectacularly sinuous, 1 in 50 curved cutting at St. Dunstan’s in Bradford was the GNR’s only route to access Exchange joint station (L&YR/GNR) from the Leeds direction. The ‘J39’s’ were often used as banking engines on the outward journey and then returned light engine or attached (as here) to an incoming train that has 64796 is piloting 61296. The typical period terraces of Maw Street on the left and Ellen Street on the right are long gone but this route remains open.
