6114 1948-04-24 London Paddington
A typical GWR suburban train leaving Paddington
View eastward, towards the buffer-stops, with a local train, probably for Slough and Reading, leaving Platform 6, headed by '6100' 2-6-2T No. 6114 (built 9/31): from 1931 until 1960 the whole class of 70 6100s worked in the London Division, dominating the suburban services. Just four months since Nationalisation, this engine is still in Great Western livery and lacking a smokebox number-plate. Right over on the left can be a seen an LPTB Underground train on the Hammersmith & City line.
Peter Kerslake adds "The lads over on Platform 8 have taken advantage of the conveniently paced porters' trollies, invaluable in those days for weary legs, as 6114 displaying Express Passenger lamps waits to depart from Paddington.
As would be expected for a class intended for working London suburban passenger duties the vast majority of the class of seventy were at Old Oak Common and Reading, with Oxford and Southall also having an allocation in the mid 'fifties, although by 1956 this one in company with 6102 was down at Newport Ebbw Junction, with a few being at Tyseley and Bristol Bath Road depots as well.
Those "6100's" working over London Transport inner suburban lines were fitted with a form of that Company's automatic brake system which would immediately be activated in the event of an adverse signal being passed, with the G.W.R. Automatic Train Control equipment in return being modified for their use on such electrified lines."
