6167 1958 Paddington
A relly nice shot of 6167 taken cross the tracks in 1958 with what seems to be a rake of empty stock from Old Oak carriage sidings destined for a later departure from here at Paddington.
6167 had been the only one of her class allocated to Didcot a year or so earlier , the majority of the seventy members of the " 6100 " class being located at Depots nearer London as it was for work on London area local suburban duties that Mr . Collett introduced this development of the original Churchward design in 1931 .
In order to work over electrified lines they were equipped with London Transport designed additional automatic brake equipment with their own G.W.R. Automatic Train Control contact pads capable of being raised automatically to clear the electified lines .
My 1956 shedbook shows that there were fourteen of the " 6100 " class allocated respectively to both Reading and Old Oak Common , whilst Southall had seven , and Oxford had six , with a handful at Newport , Tyseley and Bristol Bath Road .
Displaced by Electric Multiple Units on suburban passenger duties in the early sixties the first to be condemned was 6100 itself in 1958 , with the last nine remaining in service until 1965 .
Only one survived into preservation , namely 6106 which is today at Didcot inthe care of the Great Western Society
