6166 1960-08-09 Patchway
The RU restricted use 'Paddington' Toad has strayed from home!
6166 was one of the last of the " 6100 " class , introduced from 1931 and primarily intended for London suburban duties , Mr. Collett having developed them from the earlier " 5100 "class but with increased boiler pressure and tractive effort , and they lasted in and around Paddington and upon the Westen Region suburban services until the late ' fifties with the majority being allocated to Old Oak and Reading .
In this view , however , 6166 is banking a freight from South Wales up to Patchway loop and away from the mile long Patchway New Tunnel , the gradient here being one in one hundred .
It is probable that 6166 has piloted this freight through the Severn Tunnel as far as Pilning and has there dropped back to act as banker up to Patchway before returning back to Severn Tunnel Junction for its next call to duty .
A number of the open wagons contain coal , as would be expected , and there is just a single brake van although heavier freights would often have two brake vans , each with its own guard , a number of such brakes being known as " enclosed " versions in order to provide additional protection for the guard when passing through the tunnels
The line on the extreme left is the " up " refuge siding , used to hold freight wagons .
