617 1937-05-29 Nine Elms
The LSWR’s A12 ‘Jubilee’ 0-4-2s of 1887 were that Company’s equivalent to the ‘Gladstone 0-4-2s of the LB&SCR being built at the same time and carrying out the same kind of duty. Being rather more humdrum in appearance especially with their austere Adams stovepipe chimney, they did not catch the public eye but performed excellent work nonetheless. Seen in ex-works condition at Nine Elms on Saturday May 29th 1937, No 617 carries a later Drummond boiler. No 617 built 1892 and withdrawn by SR pre-1948. To the right of this photograph is ex-Kent & East Sussex 0-8-0T No 949 ‘Hecate’ withdrawn in March 1950.
